內(nèi)容概述

Prof. LI Zhigang:

In this talk I will present a series of studies we did during last decade to understand post-reform China's social spaces, communities, and neighborhoods, especially for migrants or 'low-end population’ of large cities. In particular I link it to recent debates of critical urban studies, such as the ideas or perspectives of 'planetary urbanization', 'postcolonial urbanism', and so on, for to highlight the opportunities of Global South urban studies. Basically, as an interdisciplinary topic of urban studies, out studies target on the spatial implication of China's 'great transformation', from local to global, from a plan-oriented economy to market economy, and from a rural society to urban society. We argue that post-reform urban China is marked by an ongoing transition from mixed sociospatial units such as 'danwei'?to homogeneous communities such as commodity housing enclaves, urban villages, foreigner neighborhoods, etc. We disclose the kaleidoscope of social spatial reconfiguration, its linkages with globalization, marketization, and migration, and articulate its unique modality of state impacts, largely from a comparative perspective. The work mainly include selected cases of Pearl River Delta cities: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Dongguan, using the methods of urban geography, sociology, anthropology, ethnographical exploration, and planning. In and for a new era, I articulate the worlding of China's greater urban experiments, the theoretical niche of urban China studies, and the (dis)embedness of theories from afar.
